INTRODUCTION

This web site deals primarily with artists living and working in Wales at present. There are, however, exceptions such as Welsh artists working temporarily outside the pricipality (e.g. Dan Llywelyn Hall/Harrow, James Selway/Barcelona), as well as those who have passed away within the period covered (e.g. Ernest Zobole, Esther Grainger, Ronald Cour). Of course, the list of artists is by no means complete, but on-going, as interested young artists are constantly added (e.g. Liam O'Connor, Iwan Lewis, Brian Watkins). Furthermore, the list of names also depends on the availabilty of space, as the web site is non-commercial. For example, on the whole those who have their own web site or web page will only be represented by a link. Those who do not have a web site, or only a brief mention on a page of another site, will be given space, i.e. if they do not object to having their CV published.

The subject of the Visual Arts in Wales has been discussed in detail by both Peter Lord, in his three volumes on "The Visual Arts of Wales" ('Industrial Society', 2000, dealing with the contemporary art scene), and by Hugh Adams in his book 'Imaging Wales', 2003. The latest addition to this series on the visual arts in Wales is C.Kinsey & C.Lloyd-Morgan's 'Imaging the Imagination', 2005, which illuminates the close relationship between painting and the word, especially poetry. A new publication in the métier of Artists in Wales is in the making, i.e. Dr.Anne Price-Owen's book on women artists in Wales which should become available towards the end of next year.

The interest in the visual arts in Wales has greatly increased in the past few years, and a growing number of galleries all over the country (see LINKS) now serve both artists and collectors. The purpose of this web site is also to provide viewers with a source of reference, as well as visual access to some of the works in private & public collections.

Welsh artists are infrequently mentioned in international publications. BETHAN HUWS is a prime example. In ArchiSculpture... (2004:53) it states that: "...it cannot be ruled out that the initiatives of Constructivists like El Lissitzky, van Doesburg, Arp, Taeuber-Arp, Schwitters and others still have repercussions today: works such as ....Bethan Huws's room doubling (1988)....make one shudder" (...Dialogues between architecture & sculpture from the 18th century to the present day, published by Fondation Beyeler/Hatje Cantz).
Another example is DAVID NASH, on whom an important entry can be found in the publication With Space in Mind, works on paper in the collection of the Kroeller-Mueller National Museum, Otterlo, The Netherlands. Pages 112/3 are dedicated to his work up to 1983.
