The MABINOGION / Y MABINOGI continued.
The Mabinogion characters interpreted below:
From the book Branwen Daughter of Llyr:
Bendigeidfran/Brân son of Llır (see Iwan Bala) was king of all Britain. One day he was approached by the
king of all Ireland, Matholwch, for the hand of his daughter Branwen. The tragic story tells of
Branwen being caught up in the treachery between the opposing parties. She is taken to Ireland
where she is ill-treated. A terrible war ensues between Wales & Ireland. Eventually, Branwen
returns to Britain where she dies of a broken heart because she believes that the terrible
devastation in both countries was caused by her.
From the book Pwyll Prince of Dyfed:
Teyrnon Twryf Liant (see Sarah Hope) was lord of Gwent Is-Coed. He had a mare, which foaled every year but
every time the foal was spirited away. One night he outwitted the being that was responsible for
this mystery and hacked off its hand. From it appeared a bonny boy who grew up with Teyrnon, his
wife and the saved foal. In time the boy was given to Rhianon to ease the penance she was suffering.
She named the boy Pryderi. Eventually, he ruled peacefully and prosperously over the seven
cantrefs of Dyfed.
