Martyn was born in 1957 in Coventry and moved to Wales in 1981. From 1975 to 1979 he studied Fine Art at Newport College of Art, specialising in illustration. Thereafter he briefly worked as a screen printer for the Metropolitan Police in Kingston upon Thames. He had a studio in Carmarthanshire/West Wales, but periodically lives on a canal narrow-boat in the Midlands.

Artist's statement: "Upon leaving Newport College of Art, where I had specialised in Illustration, I realised that I wanted to be a painter rather than an illustrator. I like to paint what is around me, especially the British land and seascape and the often-grey light. Having lived in Llanybri in Carmarthenshire since moving to Wales, most of my recent paintings have been based around the village, which lies between the two estuaries of the Taf and the Towy. My paintings are not generally topographically accurate but set out to be more of a feeling of place with, maybe, an occasional recognizable feature."

Martyn Vaughan-Jones is also fascinated by the canal systems of both Wales & England and periodically returns to living on a narrowboat.
