Graham Bevan was born in 1935 in Pontypridd South Wales; sadly, he died in 2006. He began his art studies at the age of sixteen. From 1951 to 1953 he studied at Cardiff College of Art, from 1956-59 at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and finished off his training in 1960 with a post graduate studentship in fine art at London University. He has a studio in Llantwit Major. His major influence has been Ceri Richards.
Artist's Statement: "The influences and inspiration in my work begins with the experiences as a young boy during WW2 in Wales and England". Bevan refers to his family being constant wanderers; this trait eventually led him to associate 'the roamings' with the development of his later visual awareness of the country side, the patterns of nature through the explosions of colours, and the inherent textures found in the landscapoe and in cascading mountain streams. The strong influence of the coastal landsacpe, with its flotsam and jetsum of the shore features heavily in some of bevan's work from time to time, reiterating the waste of war. Bevan has found delight in making images from the landscape and the sea and this has featured strongly as subject matter in his work to this day.
Teaching Experience: lecturer in fine art at Sheffield College of Art Polytechnic.
