Artist's Statement: "My pieces are made, primarily, from found objects and materials collected from beaches, hedgerows and roadsides; they give an intimacy to my work in which I transform their original function and usual identity into my own ideas and experience. These materials are often emotive in themselves; as symbols, allusion or representation; they reflect the work and history of people in the environment; they create enigmatic references, which encourage a personal interpretation. I celebrate the anonymous creativity of people, past and present; shed builders, graffiti writers, and gate makers. In these enigmatic, sometimes elusive references we recognise our own creativity."
Her work explores her experiences of alienation, secrecy, sadness and joy. She uses images of doorways and windows as symbols for the expression of these private experiences. She works with recycled materials and objects which she perceives as containing their own histories. Sarah juxtaposes these histories into new narratives (quoted from the catalogue to the exhibition "Other Visions-Ten Women Artists" at The Gate Cardiff, March/April 2005).
